The Church Jesus Builds

You have heard it said, “That unless the Lord builds the house the laborers labor in vain.” That statement could give you peace or it could put you on edge; it all depends on what your perspectives on God’s plans and on his timetable are. A lot of areas that I witness concerning the church and organized religion leave me not only scratching my head, but also very tired. Like for example, why is it that in the Church of America that we continue doing the same things and utilizing the same methods, but still getting the same ole results. One would define that process as “insanity”. We should change the method, but we should never change the Message. Have we too become the Old Wineskins, which will be unwilling and unable to hold the new wine? You see, Old Wineskins are tough, they are rigid, they are not real flexible and if something like new wine is poured into them, they will immediately burst. Guess what happens then? Everyone realizes that the old wineskin was a major waster of wine.

It is so very hard not to want to help Jesus build his church. In other words, it is so very hard to keep our hands and noses out of the way as he is attempting to build his church. Jesus, as I read, never met formally with his disciples in a “church” building. Of course, we see him in the synagogues and temples, but it is usually turning over the profits of money changers or healing the lame, only to be scolded by the religious for doing God’s work on the Sabbath. God’s definition of the church is people. I think that many times we are too busy caught up on shrines and buildings that really serve to impress the guy across the street. My question is: do we impress the one that really counts?

I have also never read in the Bible that BIG churches are the Model of Ministry that we should be attempting to demonstrate. In fact, Jesus preached and ministered to the multitudes, but when it came time to disciple his first church he pulled them aside up the mountainside and sat down and began to teach them (Matt. 5:1). Having a big church in America has to, at times; give us a glimpse into the carnal nature of us all. I know what you’re thinking though: Bigger churches mean more souls. I hear you when you say souls, but are those souls saved and are they being discipled or are they just taking up a pew before the roll call of Hell begins? Many people insinuate to me that they attend larger churches so that they can hide. In doing so, they feel that they don’t have to get involved, so they can sneak in late and sneak out early and if they’ve done their hour on Sunday, then they are good to go.

The problem with that is, that all too often, those people become dried up fruit that before long will begin to rot on the vine and fall to the ground. The main reason for that has to be for lack of fellowship and discipleship. Well before I make all the Pastors of larger Churches feel angry at my views, I will say that some larger churches have great discipleship programs and they are thriving in the word and life. Take time to pat yourself on the back because you are not the norm.

I believe what Jesus was trying to show in his Ministry Model was the concept of Mobile Ministry. One author recently titled a book “Ministry in the Marketplace”. I believe it is the Ministry that goes with you everywhere you are. In fact, Ministry is not something you do, but it is an extension of who you are. We need to start churches where life is happening. Why is it that we rush to the freeway to get near the mall, when it is the neighborhoods and the housing projects that need our spiritual presence more?

Have we yet to realize that the reality is that people are not going to come to our churches because we build a nice building, but we are going to have to bring our churches to where the people are. The traffic in Jackson, TN. is very busy 7 days a week except for around 8 am to 11 am on Sunday. Does anyone care to solve that riddle? The answer is that surveys tell us that 70 percent of people in the South are Christians, but probably only 10 to 15% of those people actually live a life of faith in God and commitment to active discipleship in the faith.

In response to that alarming statistic, I have a great idea: I think we should cancel next Sunday am services and go door to door and witness to people about Jesus Christ. Some would say, that is a terrible idea!!! Why? I believe their reason for why is that, even though they are in church week after week, they still don’t have the faith and the power to lead others to Christ or into a deeper relationship with Christ. Pastors and Leaders, this is where our discipleship is extremely lacking.

I have decided to embark on a journey that has been described as both radical and intentional. I am going to use Jesus’s model of ministry and discipleship. And not only that, but I am going to train others to do the same. I am excited and expecting something wonderful to take place as we use simple minds like mine to share God’s heart and words to ordinary people that I know and am about to meet. I purpose to be intentional about my prayer life and about my evangelistic opportunities. I realize that it is not the job of the Senior Pastor of ANY church to do what God has called me to do. I am being called and equipped to do the work of the ministry. Therefore, whether it’s fancy, I don’t care, but as long as it’s FREE; it is what I will share!

Anti-Aging… Since When Did “Aging” Become A Bad Thing?

A posh term these days is “anti-aging”. We see anti-aging terminology all over the place – in cosmetics, vitamins, supplements, prescription medications, etc.

Since I’m well past forty, I feel like I’m qualified to speak my mind. I don’t agree with the term “anti-aging”. This term simply carries a connotation that there’s something wrong with growing older. Quite frankly, I feel like I’m just now coming into my prime. Age seems to bring with it a degree of benefit.

I prefer the terms “Preventive-Aging” and “Longevity”. These convey a meaning of being empowered with the preventive measures necessary for living healthier for longer periods of time. Let me give you a quote that I recently read:

The gradual wasting away of the body over the course of decades is not a necessary or normal component of aging.

Rather, it is the natural outcome from a lifetime of unenlightened lifestyle choices.

The Conclusion…

Through unhealthy choices you may actually function and be aging biologically at the same level
as someone 15-20 years older!

So, here’s the golden question…

How can you be one of those people who function and age biologically at a level equivalent to someone who is many years younger than you?

At Term That Makes No Sense…

If I’m totally honest, I must inform you that we, as Americans, have potentially been fleeced. Over the past 8 years, politicians have led us to believe that there is such a thing as “Healthcare Reform”. Sadly, this is not true. The reality is that it’s not “Healthcare Reform”. Instead, it is “Sick Care Reform”. Let me explain…
  • Exponential number of Americans today are turning 65 years old
  • Nine fold increase in the cost of sick care of those over 65 – 85 years compared to those prior to age 65 years.
  • More than 75 cents of every dollar spent in healthcare goes toward treating preventable sickness (ie, diabetes, stroke, heart disease, obesity)
  • Most medical providers are trained to wait until patients are drowning before they throw them a life preserver…. this is, in essence, “downstream” medicine.

What if there was a way to hedge the risks?

There is a way. It’s called “Preventive-Aging & Longevity Care”. A specialist in this area is astute at designing a longevity plan that is custom tailored to fit individual needs. Lifestyle choice coaching & hormone rebalancing are just a couple of the techniques implemented to help achieve these goals.

At Matrix Wellness Solutions, we are specialists in Preventive-Aging & Longevity Care. If you or someone you know would benefit from a personalized longevity plan, contact us for details.

Have You Kept Your New Year’s Resolution?

Well, we are just over four months into this New Year, and I’d be willing to bet that there are a lot of people out there who have fallen off of the wagon…. In fact, it might be safer to say they’ve left the reservation and possibly even thrown themselves over the cliff.

When it comes to achieving your diet and weight loss goals, accountability is king! Many well-intentioned dieters have tried to shortchange this process only to realize that failure is looming overhead. Humans are “relational” creatures - we need each other. It’s just that simple.

Other dieters struggle with discouragement. It’s very common to struggle with peaks and valleys during the weight loss process. Understanding the normal physical patterns that come along with weight loss is essential to successfully attaining weight loss goals. Having someone to coach you through all of the pitfalls will make you more likely to succeed.

Lastly, tracking everything that you eat is essential. Research shows that people who journal their daily food intake are 50% more likely to get the weight off and keep it off.

At Matrix Wellness Solutions, we provide intensive support, coaching, and encouragement for each of our clients. If you’d like to get your weight loss train back on the tracks, give us a call so that we can discuss your personalized plan.

FEAR NOT

Every day we wake up with a choice. We can choose to walk in the promises of God that he has set before us or we can choose to be afraid. I believe that “fear” is a choice and is the exact opposite of faith. In fact, Jesus said “perfect love drives out all fear”. What is perfect love except the kind of love that he can give and we can choose to walk in daily. Scripture tells us “God is love” not “God has love”. What that means to me is that its not a matter of whether God has love available to give to us it’s the fact that everything he is is LOVE. It is not by coincidence, I believe, that the Bible has 365 references to fear within its pages. It is God’s way of telling us that there is a new and different word available to us every day that may present us the opportunity to be afraid.

Here is an example of the fear that I have been confronted with and maybe you can relate to also: “Fear of The Unknown”: As you know Abraham was called to go to a land that he knew nothing about. God was requiring of him to leave home and family to enter into the place of promise and his ultimate destiny. I believe that nothing great ever happens until we are willing to step out into the unknown and walk in faith and trust in God for his provision. We should not look for faith to always make sense. In fact, faith rarely aligns itself with our logic. Remember with God, “his ways are not our ways and his thoughts are not our thoughts”. I have said many times, “life is what’s happening, when we are waiting on life to start.

My family and I are on the last legs of a journey that will end in us bringing our son Jaeden home from south of Beijing, China. Jaeden is one of only 3 children that have ever been adopted from this small orphanage in a province south of China’s capital city. Jaeden will bring great joy to our already overfilled life of change and adventure. In the natural, it doesn’t make sense that as my wife and I, being just south of our fifties, would once again embark on such a quest. As you know, most of the people our age that we went to High School with are enjoying their grandchildren and have been for some time. Our adoption which will be final as early as 6 weeks from now creates a great opportunity to be afraid for us. Questions like, “what will we do as parents to meet his needs as a child with cerebral palsy”? How will this affect our current family structure and already loaded schedules”? “How will he be accepted”? Questions like these and numerous other ones can swirl in one’s minds, if allowed too.

Even while writing out those questions that have stared me in the face many times, I realize that they are selfish in that they disallow God into the equation. In fact, what does it really matter in the grand scheme of things when God has already given his best, Jesus Christ, and he has called our family to be a part of his heart, through adoption? If God has called us to do it, then I believe it is upo to God to work it out! In fact, I hope that you will take courage in this “If it is God’s will, it is God’s bill”. With that said , I have decided to come back next BLOG and share some other areas of our lives that fear can attempt to divert us. Until then, Keep the Faith.

The Number One Vitamin Deficiency & Why It Could Be Killing You

Vitamin D deficiencies are rampant among patients today. Low Vitamin D levels can lead to depression, anger, irritability, heart disease, blood vessel inflammation, heart attacks, strokes, low thyroid function, osteoporosis, premature bone fractures, a weak immune system, cancer, and adult onset diabetes.

Let’s just look at one particular example…

According to a landmark study published in 2006, in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, higher Vitamin D levels (> 50ng/ml) translated to a 51% reduced incidence of cancer. The same study showed that in order to raise levels from 20ng/ml to 50ng/ml, it would require a dose of approximately 4,500 i.u. per day of Vitamin D.

Despite numerous other studies proving the health benefits of properly optimizing Vitamin D levels, a government-sponsored press release was published in 2012 with statements that there are no osteoporosis health benefits in supplementing with Calcium or Vitamin D. Within hours, headlines in the Washington Post read, “Task Force Recommends Against Vitamin D, Calcium Supplements”. Many other headlines just like this one echoed around the media globe.

As the late Paul Harvey would say, “And now, for the rest of the story.”

According to it’s own guidelines, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends a daily allowance of Vitamin D at a dose of 600 i.u. per day, yet in the press release above, the government task force only looked at doses of 400 i.u. of Vitamin D and 1,000 mg of Calcium per day. The data was flawed. Every medical professional knows that there are significant osteoporosis health benefits with proper doses of Vitamin D and Calcium.

This type of misinformation is detrimental to the American public. Sadly, many people will abandon these valuable supplements and suffer because of it. Why would a government-sponsored task force want to publish such data? Why wouldn’t they tell the whole story?

I’m not a conspiracy theorist, and I can’t even pretend to figure out this maze of dysfunction, but what I do know is this; we have to be proactive in our own healthcare. I would go even further to add, we have to be proactive in our own WELLNESS CARE! I encourage people to read, read, and read some more. Become informed health consumers. Don't just depend on being fed information by your insurance company or healthcare provider. BE PROACTIVE & FIND A HEALTHCARE PROVIDER THAT WILL LISTEN TO YOU AND HELP YOU DEVELOP A PERSONALIZED WELLNESS PLAN.

Your life may very well depend on it.

Researchers Claim 72 Is The New 30

Some top age-management and longevity researchers believe that 72 is the new 30.

A recent German study showed that life expectancy has risen faster in the past 4 generations than it has in the history of mankind. In 1935, life expectancy was 65 now it's 78. At the turn of the 20th Century, the life expectancy was just over forty years of age.

A lot of this has to do with the industrialization of our work force, which created safer work environments for the American worker; no long were people at risk on the farm. Another study reported that life expectancy has extended by three months every year since 1840 and that birth and that babies born today are 200 times less likely to die in the first couple of years of life. Researchers believe that the introduction of antibiotics and improved healthcare have attributed to the latter.

Isn’t it great that we live in a time when we can boast of these things?

Wouldn’t it be even greater if we could ensure that the days we have are the healthiest days possible?

At Matrix, we truly view our bodies as living temples of God. As such, we do our best to maintain this temple and help others do the same thing. We do this by developing a specific “Life Plan” custom tailored to each individual’s needs. A life plan includes:
  • Lifestyle Coaching
  • Weight Management Coaching
  • Nutritional Coaching
  • Hormone Rebalancing
  • Fitness Coaching
When we put all of these things together, we may not be able to extend our years beyond what God intended for us to live, but we sure can make the years that we have much more healthy and full.

Eating Like Jesus: 8 Healthy Foods Of His Time (Part 2)

Continued...

5. Grapes

Grapes are still one of the most plentiful foods in the Middle East today. They are very high in health promoting anti-oxidant compounds called Saponins & Phytonutrients which have been shown to have heart health benefits of red grapes – decrease bad cholesterol, increase good cholesterol, and decrease triglycerides. Additionally, much like pomegranates, they have been shown to protect against the damaging effects of the breakdown of bad cholesterol.

6. Vinegar

The health benefits of vinegar have been known for quite some time. It seems to decrease the rate of absorption of carbohydrates in the diet, which, in turn, improves blood sugar control

7. Figs

Figs are high in potassium, which is essential for proper electrical activity in the heart. It’s also been shown to help support normal blood pressure. Because of its high dietary fiber content, it definitely helps maintain proper intestinal health and may also have benefits in weight management

8. Lamb

This is obviously a protein of the red meat variety. It’s unclear as to how much lamb was consumed in the Middle Eastern diet, but there are examples in Biblical texts that it was consumed regularly on special occasions.

As a red meat, it does have the saturated fat that we need to minimize exposure to; however, at thirty-six percent, it has one of the lowest concentrations of saturated fat than the other red meats. The rest of the fat is mono-unsaturated & poly-unsaturated which is the desired type of fat that has known health benefits.

Another benefit of lamb is that it is higher in Vitamin B3, Vitamin B12, Selenium, Zinc, Phosphorous, and Iron than a lot of other higher fat red meats.

I know some of you may be wondering about bread, so here’s a special note about bread: Bread during Biblical times was quite different that the bread we consume today. In fact, if a person from 2000 years ago were to eat our bread, they would barely recognize it.

In the times of our forefathers, there were only three varieties of wheat. Today, there are over 22,000 varieties of genetically modified wheat. In Biblical times, grains generally were sprouted prior to be baked or used for food. This sprouting process makes the digestion of grains much easier. Additionally, the mechanical processing of grain today makes the grain particles about 10,000 times smaller than the particle sizes back then. As a result of this smaller size, the exposure to grain is increased which makes blood sugar more likely to elevate.

As a general rule of health, I recommend staying away from grains during any type of weight loss regimen. Once the weight is lost, a sprouted grain bread by the brand name “Ezekiel Bread” can be used in moderation; however, I’m still cautious with this type of bread as well. If you notice increase in carbohydrate cravings after the consumption of Ezekiel Bread, then you should avoid it.

Eating Like Jesus: 8 Healthy Foods Of His Time (Part 1)

Coming on the heels of Easter, I thought it would be appropriate to talk about foods that Jesus may have eaten and the potential health benefits of these foods. In todays installment, we will talk about the first four foods and then cover the next four foods in the next segment.

Although there are only a very few examples of what Jesus actually ate, we can make some generalizations based on archeological findings and also by looking at today’s consumption of traditional foods in the Middle East. In many areas of the Middle East, people still eat the same foods that were eaten thousands of years ago.

1. Pomegranates

These are high in a very potent anti-oxidant called “Peroxidase” (per-ox-ee-day-ce). The health benefits of this enzyme are amazing. It protects your body from the effects of the break-down of cholesterol. Experts believe that regular consumption of this fruit can have major health benefits to the heart, breast health, prostate health, and skin health. This is why pomegranates are called “super fruits”. Additionally, a single pomegranate contains 50% of your daily allowance of fiber and Vitamin C.

2. Fish

There are several examples of this important staple in the diet of the people during Jesus’ day, and there are even more examples of the occupation of fishing in the Bible as well. The health benefits of fish are well known. The high content of Omega 3 Fatty Acids make them the ideal food for good heart health. Fatty fish that have been shown to have health benefits are Herring, Mackerel, Sardines, Lake Trout, & Salmon

3. Honey

Honey has long been recognized for its anti-microbial benefits for healing cuts and other wounds. Even more recent research has shown that the phytonutrients in honey may have cancer-fighting ability. Other researchers also believe that honey can promote healthy balance of cholesterol & blood sugar as well as promote healthy digestive tract health.

4. Olive Oil & Olives

Since the times of ancient Egypt, olives and olive oil have been a traditional staple food. Olives are exceptionally high in fiber and are known to promote heart health by helping maintain healthy cholesterol levels and controlling inflammation. This inflammatory effect reaches further than the blood vessels; most people notice improved joint mobility and decrease of pain while using olive oil. Lastly, it has shown benefits of promoting healthy blood sugar levels as well.

John 20 43 & 44

In the passages of John, we see the Apostle Peter arriving at the scene of an empty tomb, hewed from the rock of a "BORROWED" tomb. I shared yesterday that the reason it was "borrowed" was that God already knew that he would not need it for long. Is that not amazing? God, had from prior to the foundations of the earth, already devised a plan whereby his only Son would be sent to die on a cross, but would only taste death for 3 days and then be gloriously raised from the grave. To this reality do we owe the gratitude for a promise that is forever true. That promise, is the foundation on which every Christian builds his/her faith. To know that Jesus had the grace and ability to bear our sins upon the cross and then to realize that he further threw aside the power of sin and the death as he burst forth from the grave clothes that day is absolutely amazing.

With that point made, I feel that Jesus was again confirming to us that "It is Finished"! You see, on the cross, he said "It is Finished", but what he was referring to was that every sin ever committed and ever to be committed was laid upon his shoulders. This picture was so gruesome that even the Heavenly Father had to turn his gaze away from the Son as he bore the brunt of our wrongdoings. But then Jesus, according to Colossians, took those sins and nailed them to the cross and thus made a public spectacle out of Satan himself. In other words, Satan became an embarrassment to the Universe as Jesus turned and took all that Satan did and declared again his eternal judgement to come.

There is actually more to the tomb scene that deserves attention also. The fact that those grave clothes lay wadded up to the side is amazing, but what is even more amazing is that the relevance of the "napkin" that lay folded at the place where Jesus head once lay. You see, culturally speaking, the folded napkin signified the same thing that it would have signified in those days in Jewish Culture. Let me explain: If a guest were to eat at a home and at some point in the dining experience have to leave or get satisfied with his meal, he would wad the napkin up and thus signify his readiness to be done. In other words, "I am finished". But this is not what happened in the tomb that day. In fact, Jesus did just the opposite. He took the napkin and the neatly folded it leaving it where the inquiring disciples were sure to notice. You see the folded napkin, culturally speaking, meant that the person who sat at the meal of the host, should he need to be excused for any reason, would then fold the napkin and thus signify to the host, "I AM NOT FINISHED". WOW-Did you just see that? Jesus was proclaiming the message here that he was indeed not finished. In fact, though his earthly ministry was ending, I believe he was pointing to the fulfillment of the coming ministry through the Holy Spirit and the eventual birth of the Church. So, in closing, Jesus is not only not done, but he is just beginning in many of our lives and our ministries. I choose to believe that indeed he is not finished, but that "he who began a good work in me is able to complet that work". I am thankful today that through the cross we have the forgiveness of sins and through HIS resurrection we have the promise of new life and life eternal through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Do Women Need Testosterone?

I thought That Was For Men

If you or someone you know has dealt with menopause, then you’re probably familiar with the hormones Estrogen and Progesterone. These are the most commonly talked about hormones in menopause. There’s a good reason these are some of the most commonly talked about hormones in women. Estrogen and Progesterone are two of the hormones that truly make a woman feminine vs. masculine. They also regulate a woman’s natural cycle and make it possible to bare children.

However, one of the most overlooked hormones in menopause is Testosterone. That’s right… Testosterone. Most women that I talk to don’t even realize that they have this hormone, yet it’s just as vital as Estrogen and Progesterone when it comes to menopausal health.

Testosterone in women is important in the following ways:

  • Improving well-being
  • Improving energy
  • Improving strength and endurance
  • Improving body composition
    • By decreasing visceral fat (fat around the middle)
    • By increasing muscle mass
  • Improving bone density
  • Improving sexual function (libido)
  • Improving metabolism
  • Improving hot flashes
  • Improving mood
  • Improving vascular headaches
  • Increasing collagen
  • Increasing skin thickness
  • Improving skin texture
  • Decreasing wrinkles
  • Decreasing cellulite

Aside from the benefits mentioned above, there are known benefits in preventing heart disease. A study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology (2002) noted that, “Carotid artherosclerosis was significantly lowest for women in the highest quartile of total testosterone compared with those in the lowest quartile”. In layman’s terms, this means that healthy levels of testosterone, in the upper 25% of the range, have significant benefits in lowering heart disease risk, specifically arterial blockages.

As a general rule-of-thumb, if you have the opposite of the benefits mentioned above, you are likely deficient in testosterone. A simple blood test can confirm whether or not this is the case. If you suspect this is the case with you, ask for help to determine if you are a candidate for biologically identical testosterone replacement therapy.

Little Known Health Benefits Of Melatonin

O.k., here’s the obvious. Melatonin helps with sleep. I know, I can hear through the waves of cyberspace the resounding… “Duhh.” More specifically, it helps influence sleep patterns – the fancy name is circadian rhythm. By influencing the deeper stages, Stage IV and REM, quality of sleep improves and health benefits are conveyed.

Here are some published health benefits of Melatonin:

Influences the release of Human Growth Hormone (HGH); which can affect weight loss and healthy weight maintenance
  • Energizes
  • Enhances Mood
  • Increases Natural-Killer-Cells
  • Modulates Immune Function
  • Protects Against Cancer
    • Potent Antioxidant
    • Free Radical Scavenger
  • Lowers Blood Pressure
  • Decreases Migraines & Cluster Headaches
Melatonin is readily available in most all pharmacies. The best form to use is a “time release, micronized” form. This allows for better absorption and longer duration of action, compared to the standard over-the-counter versions, which more closely mimics the body’s natural Melatonin release. Typical dose range is anywhere from 1mg to 30mg per night. Because of the known health benefits and the relative low side effect profile, this supplement is a good all-around addition to any wellness regimen.

Fresh Manna from Luke

Luke 19:40 says “I tell you, he replied, If they keep quiet, the stones will cry out. “Some of you may already know the story of Jesus as he made his way into Jerusalem, one final time, before his most horrific death on the cross and eventual resurrection from the dead. What is still amazing to me is that Jesus knew what was about to take place, but he chose to surrender his life anyway. At any point in his earthly life, Jesus could have and deservedly so, called it “quits”. He could have said to his eternal father, “I have calculated the cost of my eventual suffering and I feel the cost far outweighs the benefit”.

Suffering is an interesting thought to say the least. The reason it is so interesting is that it means something different to every person on the planet. If you were to ask my teens what suffering is they may describe to you a week without their electronics. To others, that are less fortunate than we are, suffering can take on a whole new meaning. To some, suffering is truly not knowing where your next meal might come from, or worse yet, to watch your children waste away from the effects of malnourishment. And although time does not permit me to expound on the many examples of suffering, I do believe the term is relevant to one’s own definition to what it means to them. To clarify my aforementioned statement about my teens and their electronics, I hope you will allow me to say that I feel their definition is one more along the lines of inconvenience and not suffering.

With that said I wanted to point out that Jesus truly did suffer a cruel and agonizing death at the hands of the multitudes as they tortured him and then nailed him to a cross. And unlike any of the other suffering that I see on this earth, this suffering gives my heart joy. Why, because I know his suffering did not end in defeat nor was it a futile waste of time and life. In fact, because of Jesus choice to give himself over to his torturers, I now can have eternal life. In the book of 1 John, the Bible says that “the reason Jesus came was that the might destroy the works of the devil”. Jesus has once and for all defeated the power of sin and death that has reigned in our lives. In fact, scripture further tells us that Jesus made a mockery of Satan as he took his accusations and death sentence upon mankind and nailed it to the cross. I heard someone once say “if that doesn’t light your fire, then your wood is wet”.

To think that Jesus would have to tell the crowd of religious that what his disciples did in worship was most welcomed and most appropriate is an understatement. I wonder though, did they really understand what was about to happen to him? I believe if they had they may have been in a state of disbelief and mourning. Can I encourage you with this, no matter what this life offers to us, there is and never will be an opportunity like we have today. What is that, you may ask? It is the opportunity to worship him in spite of the suffering, the circumstances, the heartaches or the hardships of this life. We are very fortunate in this aspect: We know the rest of the story! The rest of the story is that we can have joy because Jesus chose to ride the last few miles of that journey, even when some folks ridiculed him and only few people worshipped him. I have a choice and you have a choice. My choice is that I can worship him as the resurrected King of Kings that he is or I can miss the opportunity that he has given me. Scripture is always true, if you don’t worship him someone and something will and always does. I don’t know about you but what a great time to reflect and thank him for his choice and our choice to worship.

Momma Taught Me To Clean My Plate…Part 2

In my last installment, we talked about the problem of being driven to overeating by our subconscious.

So what do we do about it? Here are some techniques that you can use to help overcome this problem. I want you to try this for the next week and see how much of a difference it makes.

  • Write down everything you put in your mouth… even if it’s a piece of gum; keep a daily record. Research shows that people who do this one thing are most likely to lose weight and keep it off.
  • When you eat, concentrate on chewing more slowly.
  • Don't eat in front of the T.V. or while listening to music.
  • Prepare your plate of food and put the rest away, so that there’s no temptation to go back for seconds.
  • After you eat a meal, ask yourself these questions (for POSITIVE REACTIONS):
    • Feel full and content?
    • No sweet cravings?
    • Not hungry at all?
    • No need for a snack?
    • Feel recharged?
    • Energy is even (not high or low)?
    • No “crashing” feelings?
    • Feel uplifted?
    • Mind is clear and not foggy?
    • Can easily put words and thoughts together?
  • After you eat a meal, ask yourself these questions (for NEGATIVE REACTIONS):
    • Physically full, BUT still hungry?
    • Desire something sweet?
    • Already hungry?
    • Need a snack?
    • Energy has not improved at all?
    • Feel wired, but tired underneath?
    • Crashed and burned; need a nap?
    • Feel anxious and/or irritable?
    • Brain is foggy?
    • Gut feel heavy?
Here are some quick rules for interpreting these NEGATIVE reactions:

  • Excess Fat and/or Protein will result in the following:
    • Physically full, BUT still hungry?
    • Desire something sweet?
    • Energy has not improved at all?
    • Gut feel heavy?
  • Insufficient calories and/or excess carbohydrates will result in the following:
    • Already hungry?
    •  Need a snack?
  • Excess Carbohydrates will result in the following:
    • Feel wired, but tired underneath?
    • Crashed and burned; need a nap?
    • Feel anxious and/or irritable?
    • Brain is foggy?
These techniques may seem a little crazy at first, but as you get used to them, you will begin to develop more self-awareness. In the long run, you’ll be more in tune with your body and your body’s response to foods, and this will lead to A BETTER YOU!

Momma Taught Me To Clean My Plate…Part 1

Isn’t it funny how quickly our past can dictate our present without us even realizing it? Something as simple as a childhood lesson can have a powerful impact on our adult life and even our health.

Growing up, I was always encouraged to clean my plate because there were starving kids in Africa who don’t have anything --- a classic case of guilt. And, although I was never truly forced to clean my plate, I also heard the dreaded words that millions of kids have heard for generations: “You can’t have anything sweat until you finish your veggies and meat” --- a classic case of bribery. I’m sure a lot of you can relate to this.

From my own personal perspective, I learned to eat faster in order to get to “the good stuff”. For as long as I can remember, I was always a heavy kid. I remember being mortified every time we had to buy new clothes. My mom always had to buy my jeans at Sears because I needed Tough Skin Husky size jeans. You see, I had fallen into a cycle of eating fast, not giving my brain time to catch up to my stomach, and cleaning my plate, just to get to “the good stuff”.

Many a well-intentioned parent has fallen into this same trap. I’m one of them --- I have used guilt & bribery to encourage my own kids to eat more healthy foods. It’s simply engrained in us from a very early age. It’s comfortable, it’s familiar, and it even works to some degree.

The problem with most people arises when the voices of guilt and bribery don't have to be audibly spoken, and the automatic drive to eat faster overtakes the brain’s ability to tell you when you’re full. At some point in our developmental years, we hear these messages so much, and develop bad eating habits to the point that it becomes a part of who we are. On many levels, it’s no longer even conscious. It forces us into a cycle of consuming more calories, which is a huge problem.

In my next installment, we’ll talk about some things you can do to end this cycle.

Are the Giants Bigger Than the Grapes?

Number 13: 1-20

The Book of Numbers is quite phenomenal. In the chapter listed above is a recount of God’s desire to give to the Children of Israel his blessings and provision. It’s just like God to want to give to us more than we are ready to and more than we are sometimes willing to receive. This story starts off by God speaking to Moses and instructing him to pick from among the leaders of Israel 12 men who could go up and spy out the land. Moses did as instructed and 12 men were chosen. It is interesting to me that, it was not God who needed to know about the land, nor was he curious about the inhabitants, or even curious about the size of the fruit that was there. But, on the contrary, God wanted the Israelites to know what they would soon be up against and what they could soon possess. I said that, to say this: “God desires to keep us informed of every battle that we are in & the battles we are about to face. He wants to give us insight into the good things that lie on the journey ahead for us”. In essence, God wanted them to know about the size of the Giants, but he also wanted them to know about the size of the GRAPES!

It’s amazing, in some ways to me, that 12 men went up into the land, but only 10 men came back with a good report. At the same time, I don’t think the results would be much different today. There are those in our faith that can be faced with any situation and seem to be unshakeable, then there are those who worry constantly at any resistance or any confrontation that life brings them. I like to think of it like this: “What they (the spies) said about what they saw determined where they went.” I feel it is no different today. There are plenty of opportunities to worry and fret and get anxious, but at the same time those same opportunities are times that we can trust in God and his undying faithfulness. It truly is about our perception of life that makes all the difference in the world.

Let me ask this, have you ever gotten tickled (laughing) to the point that you couldn’t stop? I have and it never fails to happen that those around you begin to laugh also. In the same way, fear, doubt, anxiety, or whatever you choose to label it are also very contagious. Ultimately, what we see and how we respond to it verbally will affect our children, coworkers, spouses, etc. I am not sure about you, but I want to be a person that when I influence others I want it to be a positive impact on their lives.

So with that said, let me close by asking you a question. Had you been one of the 12 sent up to spy out the Promised Land, would the Giants that lived in the land been bigger than the Grapes that hung from the vine? Remember, it’s all about how you see it.

How Can I Prevent or Reverse Type II Diabetes?

There’s been a lot of talk lately about diabetes remission. Edward Gregg from the Centers For Disease Control (CDC) summarizes the common thinking of today very well…

Kind of a long-term assumption really is that once you have diabetes there's no turning back on it, and there's no remission or cure -- Edward Gregg

However, in a recent study that Edward Gregg and his team at the CDC published in the Journal of The American Medical Association (JAMA), 11.5% of those with Type II Diabetes who participated in a one year program of intensive diet and exercise were found to have blood sugar levels that approached those levels of their “pre-diabetic” state.

Additionally, those who were more newly diagnosed had a greater chance of falling into the 11.5% group of people who went into remission. The hallmark of the research findings was that weekly accountability and support played just as important a role as diet and exercise.

This gives hope to those with Type II Diabetes that aggressive lifestyle change & proper accountability can have significant impact on overall health outcomes with Type II Diabetes. It’s no longer a mandatory sentence that has to be accepted. It can be fought, and the battle can be won.

At Matrix Wellness Solutions, we have had a number of clients who have reduced or stopped their diabetes medications under the close medical supervision that we offer through our weight loss programs. Below is a graph of one such patient.

Glucose Results

Upon admission to the clinic, this person had a fasting blood sugar of 260; he was also 320 pounds and taking 60 units of insulin along with two different oral diabetes medications. Over a 6 month period, his blood sugar continued to decline and he lost 70.4 pounds. The end result was that he came off of insulin & one of his oral diabetes medications completely. The other oral medication has been cut in half and we are hopeful that he will be off of this one in the next 3 months.

During this six-month period, this particular patient was seen on a weekly basis. He was also given dietary education, support & accountability for a customized diet plan with moderate exercise. His lab work and blood sugars were monitored frequently throughout this period and adjustments were made to his medications as needed.

At Matrix Wellness Solutions we have real people with real results.

Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy

How Is Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy Different Than Conventional Hormone Therapy?

The meaning of bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) is two-fold.

On one hand, it’s meaning is derived from the natural substances from where it derives. For example, BHRT compounds are usually created from plant sources such as soybeans and wild yams; occasionally, these soybean and wild yam extracts will be synthesized, but only to make them more closely mirror the chemical structure as your own hormones. These substances more closely replicate human hormones in the body than Conventional Hormone Therapy (CHT) do. In many cases, CHT such as synthetic estrogen is derived from synthesizing compounds from horse by-products (ie, estrogen is synthesized from pregnant mare’s urine & contains numerous extra estrogens that the human body cannot process).

Secondly, BHRT refers to the flexibility of dosing for the clinician. Because of the clinician’s ability to specifically compound the hormone exactly to a client’s individual needs, BHRT more closely replicates the biological states in the body.

SAFETY

BHRT and CHT differ greatly in their safety profile. In recent years, there have been two large studies – Million Women Study In the UK and US Women’s Health Initiative Trial -- that have shown the link between CHT and breast cancer, endometrial cancer, & ovarian cancer. Other studies have shown lack of benefit for preventing Alzheimer’s and have shown increased risk of heart disease and stroke.

Allow me to interject a provocative thought: If puberty brings with it very high hormonal surges, then why don’t we see the incidences of female cancer, heart disease, and stroke increase during this time? This leaves us with the conclusion that there’s something significantly wrong with CHT. In the studies mentioned above, Progestin (on the market as Provera) was the culprit for increases the cancer risks and not conferring vascular protection.

If you were to look at the research completed for BHRT, you would not find the same risks. One study (Hargrove et. al.; An alternative method of hormone replacement therapy using the natural sex steroids. Infert Repro Med Clin N Am. 1995;) demonstrated that BHRT reproduced identical benefits of synthetics with better outcomes and fewer side effects; because of this, BHRT improved patient compliance. Progesterone (do not confuse with Progestin/Provera) was shown to always be cancer and cardiac protective.

What can I do about this?

Trust me when I say that this is only the tip of the iceberg. There’s a lot more to treating hormone imbalances than meets the eye, but when done right, can give a person protection against numerous age-related illnesses such as Alzheimer’s, Osteoporosis, Heart Disease, Stroke, & Cancer. It will also likely help you feel more youthful and energetic, like you did in your 20’s. Each person’s treatment is customized to his or her own individual needs. The first step is to get a proper consultation and lab work. From there, a plan can be developed to get back in balance.

Living a Life of Expectation

In the first chapter of the Book of Habakkuk the writer cries out to God for Justice. He is perplexed as he looks around at society. He describes what he sees with words like “violence” and “destruction”. In fact he says “conflict and strife are all around me”. If there ever was a culture that it seems that strife and conflict are all around, it would have to be the times we are living in right now. I am sure that you would agree that we are living in difficult days, to say the least.

However, tucked away in the Old Testament is a short oracle written by a Prophet of God that basically describes a man’s heart cry as he looks around at the disparity he sees. But, as always, God has an answer for the cries of each of our hearts-young and old; sinner or saint. I have heard people say “If God were real, he would not allow such injustice to prevail”. I have others say if God were alive, he could not stand to see the suffering children die of hunger, AIDS, and other such tragedies.

The fact is God is very much alive and I believe his heart aches and breaks every time one of his little children sheds the smallest of tears. This is same God who knew us all even before we were created in our mother’s womb and this same God has given us a plan and a destiny for our lives (Jer 29:11). So to say that he does not care is to not understand his heart. God cares so much that he sent his son that we might have salvation and then he created you and I that we might reach out to the hurting and the less fortunate of our world. Contrary to our American Values system, God has not blessed us that we might build bigger and more robust barns, but he has blessed us that we might be vehicles and the feet by which his love and Gospel are spread to the world.

As the passage continues we find that God does answer the Prophet with an amazing choice of words. In paraphrasing, he says to him “Watch in expectation and amazement and see if I will not work on your behalf in ways that you would not believe even if I told you” WOW!! That is powerful. The reason it is so powerful is that for every wrong that we see or experience, God has something right and better for us. The problem is sometimes one of faith and perspective. I feel that when we pray, we should not pray with the motivation that we will get something when we pray, but at the same time, we should pray with the expectation that God is who he says he is and that because of that fact alone, he will answer our prayers and will provide everything we need and when we need it.

So with that said, I challenge you to live a life of Expectation and believe God for the unbelievable in your lives.

What Your Primary Care May Not Know About Your Thyroid May Hurt You

This past week, I accidentally recorded the Fox News Channel’s show, Sunday Housecall. Just as I was about to delete it from my DVR list, the show’s description caught my eye. One of the lead segments was on thyroid health. Out of curiosity, I decided to watch the recording.

Dr. David Samadi made the following statement: “Your doctor may say that your thyroid hormones are normal, but they could be a low normal, not optimal enough. So, you may have to have a conversation (with your Primary Care Provider) and boost it toward the higher normal.”

I see this all the time with our clients at Matrix Wellness Solutions. Sub-clinical hypothyroidism, as Dr. Samadi is referring to, is more common than one might think. It’s also one of the most overlooked disorders of aging. Now, don’t get me wrong. When I speak of “aging” in the last statement, I’m referring to anyone over 30 years of age. Few people realize that from age 30 to 50 years our thyroid hormone declines about 20-30% -- decline measured as decreased production, decreased conversion, decreased sensitivity, or a combination of these. It may still be in the normal range, but it’s definitely NOT optimal.

Treating thyroid hormone to “optimal” levels is one of the most beneficial things we can do in medicine. It only takes a slightly different approach and mindset, but the benefits are numerous: weight loss, blood sugar regulation, osteoporosis prevention, mental clarity, short-term memory improvement, mood enhancement, and the list goes on.

I’ve included the link to the Sunday Housecall segment, so you can check it out for yourself.

Enjoy…

Is The Mediterranean Diet A Cure For Heart Disease?

Is The Mediterranean Diet A Cure For Heart Disease?

Why a traditional “low-fat diet” may not be good for your heart

In a recent study conducted over five years in Spain, researchers discovered that patients who ate a Mediterranean Diet high in healthy fruits, vegetables, fish, extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) and certain nuts were 28-30% less likely to develop cardiovascular disease than those who ate a standard low-fat diet. These results were published in the “bible” of medicine, The New England Journal of Medicine, just this past week.

You may be saying to yourself right now, “This isn’t new information. We’ve already heard about this haven’t we?” The answer is “Yes” and “No”. It has been “suspected” for years that those who live in Mediterranean areas have less heart disease and stroke. Up until this point, this information has only been gathered by observation. There has never been a “randomized-controlled” study to prove it (sorry for the technical jargon). This study is the first of its kind to show, with actual hard proof, that this type of diet is beneficial.

Ten Helpful Tips For Adopting A Mediterranean Diet

  • QUALITY of fat is essential – EVOO is the preferred fat with the Mediterranean Diet; keep in mind, EVOO is a fragile oil, therefore using it in the raw, uncooked form is best when possible
  • Fresh fruits should be the only desserts – when eating fresh fruit, a higher proportion of berries is the most beneficial because they have a very low glycemic index; the acceptable fruits include:
    • Fresh berries, apples, cherries, dates, peaches, grapefruit, and melons
  • Stay away from refined/processed foods – ie, breads, sweets, sodas, canned foods, and processed meats
  • If you do eat red meat, limit it to 1-2 times per week and only eat “free-range” or “non-grain-fed”
  • Eat as much “deep-sea” fish as you can fit into your diet – this provides an excellent source of healthy fats in the diet, which are good for your heart and blood vessels
  • Keep in mind, poultry and eggs are also acceptable proteins
  • One or two days per week, take a break from animal protein and just eat fruit and veggies; the acceptable vegetables are:
    • Artichokes, eggplant, celery, broccoli, onions, chick peas, peppers, sweet potatoes, lettuce, mushrooms, celery and tomatoes
  • One glass of medium to full bodied red wine per day was shown to have heart healthy benefits
  • When you feel the need for a snack, eat a small serving of nuts – cup your hand and whatever you can hold in the palm of your hand, is an acceptable portion once or twice a day; this should be about ¼ cup PER DAY.
  • When choosing the right nuts, always try consume them in the most natural state; processed nuts are too high in salt, have added vegetable oil, and have usually been baked, which breaks down their healthy fats into unhealthy, oxidized fats. I typically choose Macadamia nuts or Raw Almonds & occasionally Raw Cashews for my snack. I lean toward these because they are some of the lowest in Omega 6.

As with any diet, there’s always a balance between what’s NOT eaten and what IS eaten. Eating healthier takes effort. The tips mentioned above may take you a little time to adopt. With the exception of substituting some of my protein with isolated whey, I’ve personally adopted most of the Mediterranean Diet style. In the grand scheme of things, this type of diet looks very similar to the Paleo (or Paleolithic) Diet style as well. I’m a huge proponent of both of these styles because they are so anti-inflammatory in their composition. As such, they are the most beneficial for the heart, brain, blood vessels, and overall health.

Fresh Manna Monday

David, of the Old Testament, has to be one of my favorite Biblical Leaders. That opinion stems from a lot of thoughts that I have about him, but most important was God’s opinion of him. God said of David “He is a man after my own heart” I am not sure about you, but if God were to say that about me, my first question might be “God, why did you say that about me?”

I ask you, what does it mean to be a man or woman after God’s own heart? What character attributes are present? What kind of life or effort does it take to earn this worthy title? First of all, before I answer, I believe it is possible for you and I to be men and women after God’s own heart. You see, we know from scripture that it wasn’t a perfect life that earned that status. Sad to say, but David was both an adulterer and a murderer of one of his own men. In fact, God did not allow David to build the temple because of the “bloodshed” he had invoked during his time as King. So what was it about this man? I believe the answer is simple: David, although extremely far from perfect, was a true worshipper of God. I believe God fell in love with him and he with God as he lay on the mountainsides as a young boy tending the flock. Second, I believe he was “THE” man because of the fact that when he was wrong, he was quick to repent of those wrongs. When Nathan, the prophet, confronted David about his sin, David could have had Nathan beheaded and no one would have known the difference-except for David. Instead David fell to his knees weeping knowing that he had dishonored God and his family and the families of his men by his terrible actions. Third, but definitely not all inclusive, is the fact that David did not mind being who he was before the people God had called him to rule. I love the fact that David, when he became excited about God’s goodness, let the whole kingdom know that he was not ashamed to be a child of the Living God. Scripture portrays that David danced energetically and unashamed in the city streets of Jerusalem. What people, young and old alike, want from you and I the most is this: they want us to be real. I meet people every day who would greatly benefit from is someone who could be transparent about their lives and walk with Christ.

In conclusion, Is it not awesome that there was and will always be only one who was perfect, Jesus Christ? One day we will see Perfection in all its Glory, when we see him face to face. At that time, he will say to us “well done good and faithful servant”. But until then, we must strive to be a man or woman after God’s own heart.
